The Finnish Museum of Natural History DOL pages

FMNH is an official DOL site. Our primary aim is to offer interactive identification keys.  The keys may be in any language supported by the system, although English, Finnish and Swedish are preferred.  The DOL system is created by Kevin Nixon (Cornell University) and he owns exclusive rights to it.

The first keys offered in English are:

  1. The genera of Eucnemidae (Coleoptera: Eucnemidae) of the world. Data and images by J. Muona. Financial support from the Academy of Finland is gratefully acknowledged.
  2. The larvae of Eucnemidae genera (Coleoptera: Eucnemidae) of the world.  Data by J. Muona and M. Teräväinen, images by M. Teräväinen. Financial support from the Academy of Finland is gratefully acknowledged.

The interactive keys are not in their final form as of yet and the product should be used that in mind. Images may be changed and characters added, removed or redefined. The lists of species is as of yet not linked to a database but is rather a snapshot of a certain, earlier version of the world check-list (Muona & Alaruikka, in prep).  We are grateful for any suggestions for improvement and correction.

When using the keys, please observe a few important things:

  1. The program suggests the best character at all instances, i.e. the character that splits the remaining taxa as efficiently as possible. The user can skip the suggested character and go to the next best or go to the character list to pick any character.
  2. By clicking the images of the character states they can be made larger.
  3. Focus in the character state listed – not other features in the image. Many different kinds of antennae can have the 2nd and 3rd antennomeres combined shorter or longer than the 4th and often only one case is illustrated.
  4. If unsure which character state to choose, pick several – the program understands such choices as well. Once identification has started, character states not anymore present in the remaining taxa are shown in another, smaller font and cannot be chosen anymore.

The larval key includes several undescribed larval types. They will be formally described and their identification to the specific genus explained in a forthcoming publication (Teräväinen & Muona, in prep).

All rights of illustrations, images and photographs included in any key or other product published here by the Finnish Museum of Natural History belong to either the person who created them or the Finnish Museum of Natural History and any use of them without written permission is prohibited. Request for permission to use this material should be sent to the museum’s pr officer, e-mail address .

By entering the site the user agrees to have understood and accepted these terms.
